Sandcastles have been built on the beach in Bettystown for many, many years and the National Sandcastle & Sandcastle Sculpturing competitions have taken place around the date of the summer solstice every year since 2003.
Over the years hundreds of babies, toddlers, children and those young at heart have joined in the fun and built many fantastic, weird and wonderful features on the beach.
The event takes place regardless of the weather and in 2006 a wonderful sunny day resulted in an estimated record of 1200 people populating the beach for the event and even some heavy rain in 2009 couldn’t deter the crowds from joining in the fun.
This event is organised by Meath East Sand Sculptures, a local voluntary committee.
